We want to share the whole story with you about changes underway to consumer credit laws in Australia.

We think the politicians have got it wrong. The proposed laws, from our side, will harm vulnerable people, taking away their choice to quickly hire/rent essential household items like:

  • Refrigerators
  • Washing Machines
  • Televisions

And we are not the only ones. A recent article in the Australian by Columnist Janet Albrechtsen explains how changes to the consumer leasing provisions are “ill conceived”, “breach the most basic principles of individual liberty” a view fully supported by the consumer leasing industry.

“There is no evidence of widespread problems with consumer leases”

In their recent parliamentary research brief, the Institute of Public Affairs, Australia’s leading independent, non-profit public policy think tank found that there is no evidence of “widespread problems with consumer leases”. The IPA research says evidence and examples that point to unscrupulous behaviour in the industry “appear to be limited, anecdotal and preoccupied with extreme examples of a handful of ‘rogue’ operators’.

They concluded that the changes would be “thoroughly unjust if the government used this scant evidence as a justification to add a substantial regulatory burden to the vast majority of responsible consumer lease providers.” This is the same view that the consumer leasing industry has continually provided to Government.

Is the Government being misled or will they continue to ignore the facts?
